From Ancient Shores to Modern Luxury: The Rich History of Cabo San Lucas
History Cabo San Lucas

Date

Long before it was a playground for international travelers, Cabo San Lucas was a land shaped by millennia of history. The granite formations of what we now call Land’s End were created over 30 million years ago. But the human story of Cabo began much more recently—around 13,000 B.C.—with the arrival of the nomadic Pericú people.

The Ancient & Colonial Eras

The Pericú were skilled hunter-gatherers who lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years. While they are now extinct, their way of life was documented by early European settlers who first made contact.

The arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s, led by figures like Hernán Cortés, marked a significant turning point. The Baja California Peninsula became a key stop on one of the world’s most important trade routes. This era wasn’t without conflict, as the region saw decades of attacks from English and Dutch pirates before a permanent Spanish settlement was established in 1697.

Later, the 1840s brought conflicts between the United States and Mexico. Ultimately, the U.S. conceded the beautiful Baja Peninsula to Mexico, restoring tranquility and prosperity to the stunning coastal area. Over time, Cabo San Lucas grew into a renowned fishing spot, and that reputation slowly transformed it into a coveted tourist destination.

The Cabo San Lucas of Today

While international influences and the opulent preferences of its many distinguished visitors have transformed Cabo, one of the best things about the area is how it has preserved so much of its beautiful—and delicious—history and culture.
